Jami Masjid- September 27

Jami Masjid is the largest mosque in India, built in the 1600s. It is in Old Delhi opposite the Red Fort. It sits high up on a rocky outcrop. There are three entrances with huge flights of sandstone stairs leading up to the gates. Non muslims are welcome to tour except during times of prayer.
Shoes are removed at the entrance and there is usually a kind person who will watch over them for a couple of rupees. Mike was wearing shorts so he was given a cloth to cover his legs. I was wearing a long skirt and shortsleeves but I carry a scarf with me for such occasions (to wear as a shawl or cover my head) so I was deemed appropriately dressed.
The highlight was climbing the minaret (tower) on the left in the picture. We climbed a narrow, dark winding staircase to the top. We were rewarded with an amazing view of the Red Fort and the city. It just goes on and on.
We will tour the Red Fort this weekend. It takes a few hours to see the whole thing and there is a light show after dark with narration of the history of the fort and mosque.
